The exhibition organised at the National Art Center in Tokyo on July 10th 2007 was in itself a striking display of extravagance. Inside an impressive glass palace designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, Piaget has brought together for just one day no less than 150 contemporary and historical models – watches, jewellery and assorted objects - testifying to its abundant creativity.
This event was also a tribute to the artists who have left their indelible imprint on the history of the House through a melding of talents such as Piaget loves to orchestrate.
Famous French artists, Pierre et Gilles, who created Piaget advertising campaign visuals revealed a new work of art entitled “ Le rêve”. In a spectacular enchanted stage-setting of roses and twinkling stars, model Anne, Piaget icon in Japan, appears in a dress by fashion designer Iwaya and adorned by Possession jewellery. More than 800 people attended the event among them distinguished guests such as the ice-skating champion Shizuka Arakawa , actress Reiko Takashima, model Anne, fashion designer Toshikazu Iwaya and Swiss vice-president Pascal Couchepin.
Since its founding in 1874, Piaget stands for unique watchmaking know-how allied with a pioneering spirit. From the famous hand-wound ultra-thin Calibre 9P to the world’s thinnest shaped tourbillon movement, Calibre 600P, the exceptional talent of Piaget’s craftsmen lies in their ability to constantly reinvent age-old watchmaking techniques and to make people dream by creating emotions around gold and diamonds.
Piaget was the first firm to combine Haute Horlogerie and High Jewellery. The first to imagine watches that were jewellery creations – and vice-versa. The first to make a speciality of ultra-thin movements and to grasp the aesthetic issues at stake. The first to invent different ways of wearing watches.
Piaget extravaganza was a firework display of inventiveness, featuring hard stone dials, sculptural cuff-watches, ring-watches and necklace-watches from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s including Jackie Onassis watch. It was also the occasion to discover Piaget’s fruitful collaboration with artists such as Dali, Erni, and Arman. But Piaget’s striking audacity was also expressed through exceptional contemporary watches and jewellery models, among them a Protocole XLS watch weighting 75.4 carats and a discoball motif watch which won the price of Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie in 2006.
Piaget Extravaganza exhibition is also to be shown in august at Isetan Shinjuku (from 8th to 15th) and Seibu Ikebukuro (from 22nd to 28th).
