Pilará-Piaget team won Copa Cámara de Diputados

An impressive young Pilará-Piaget team won the coveted Copa Cámara de Diputados polo tournament in Buenos Aires after powering their way undefeated through the tournament against more experienced and higher rated sides. This is Piaget’s second team and is not captained by 10 goal super star, Marcos Heguy.

The Piaget-sponsored polo team beat Chapaleufú 14-10 in the final played Monday (14 December) on the No.1 ground at Palermo, the “Cathedral of Polo” in the heart of the Argentine capitol. The Camara, first presented in 1924 by the nation’s parliament, is considered the country’s most important competition after the Triple Crown and one of the most important in the world.

With a handicap of 25 goals, Pilará-Piaget was one of the newest and lowest rated of 15 teams in the polo tournament that included sides of up to 31 goals. Yet the Piaget squad won all their four polo match up to the finale, including a 31-goal Miramar side in the semi-final. Their opponents in the final were a 27-goal team.

The final started badly for Pilará-Piaget with Chapaleufú building a 3-0 lead in the first chukka. The Piaget team fought back, however, to reduce their deficit to 3-4 in the polo match’ second period and 5-6 in the third, tying the game at 7-7 in the fourth. After that the match went Pilará-Piaget’s way as they led 11-9 in the fifth, 12-10 in the sixth and the winning 14-10 in the seventh and final chukka.

The Piaget team’s high scorer was the No. 1, 6-goaler Diego Cavanagh, with 6 field goals to his credit. The other polo team members were Christián Laprida Jr, Joaquin Pittaluga and Tomás Garcia del Rio.
