The Piaget polo team, led by Marcos Heguy, the Swiss watchmaker’s ambassador to the polo world, began their campaign to win the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup in the British Open Championship Tuesday (June 22)at Cowdray Park Polo Club.
The new Piaget squad, formed to celebrate the opening of Piaget’s new boutique in London’s New Bond Street in October, was one of 20 teams competing for the coveted Gold Cup, one of the polo world’s three top open competitions. Marcos Heguy shares the powerful centre of the team with his brother Bautista.
Piaget’s opening match in the British Open was against Oussama Aboughazale’s Sumaya with the Mexican-American Carlos Gracida who has won the Gold Cup a record 10 times. Piaget took an early lead in the first chukka and were 4-1 ahead at the end of the period. They kept the lead by 6-4 in the second chukka, but Sumaya managed to hold them scoreless in the third to take the lead.
It was an extremely tight match through the fourth and fifth periods, with Piaget trailing by only a single goal. In the sixth and final chukka, Sumaya suddenly caught fire, holding Piaget scoreless and hitting in four straight goals to win the game 14-9.
Piaget next plays Billingbear Park on Saturday 26 June at Guards Polo Club.
